An experimental developer release brings Intel XeSS super resolution and frame generation to Linux games running under Proton, using the GPU's XMX matrix units instead of fallback methods.

The project, shared on Github, was built and tested on a OneXPlayer 3 handheld with an Intel G3 Extreme chip, and also tested on a discrete Arc B580 GPU. In Cyberpunk, the XMX implementation alone delivers a 29% performance boost. Adding XeSS Frame Generation pushes performance gains to 145% in that title. Forza Horizon 6 shows a 16% boost from XMX processing, with additional frame rate increases from 3x frame generation.

Installation requires unpacking a release archive and running an install command. The patch then applies to all games without special launch options, though it requires the native Steam client rather than the Flatpak version.

Intel has committed to bringing XeSS to Linux via Proton officially, but this experimental release arrives ahead of that effort. The Arc B580 costs around $330 and the Arc B570 costs just over $300.
