Obsidian rolled out full PC controller support for Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire in a public test build. Players can now complete either game with a controller from character creation through the end credits, including naval combat in Deadfire. The support works with Xbox and PlayStation controllers, as well as Steam Deck and Steam's Big Picture mode.

The update also reworked Deadfire's turn-based mode with improvements from Pillars of Eternity's version. Turns now follow each character's speed, combat is more lethal, and swapping weapons or drinking potions no longer costs an action. Players can toggle turn-based mode on or off during a playthrough.

The studio built in radial menus for abilities, spells, and party commands, with the interface displaying the correct button prompts for each controller type. Obsidian noted that players can switch between controller and keyboard and mouse at any time. The changes arrive as part of Patch 1.3.10.0. The public test will run "for some time" as the studio prepares for a full release, though no specific end date has been set.
