Nexus Mods will not ban AI-generated mods from its platform. Owner Victor Folmann said an outright ban would simply drive AI usage underground rather than eliminate it. Instead, the site is expanding disclosure requirements.
Starting immediately, modders must provide public explanations of how and where they used AI in any mod tagged as AI-assisted. AI tags will display more prominently on mod pages, appearing right after adult-content warnings. Nexus is also implementing new permission options to give creators control over how their work can be reused and trained on.
Folmann stated that transparency matters more than prohibition. "AI is currently used throughout the whole process of creation, from script autocompletion to generation of textures, voices, and full assets," he wrote. "An outright ban will not eliminate AI from the modding process, but will prevent people from mentioning its use."
The site commits not to use uploaded mods to train AI or sell them to anyone doing so. Nexus is investing in security tooling and specialized staff to address concerns about malicious code hidden in mods.
Modders have until January 2nd to update existing works to comply with the new rules. Folmann acknowledged mixed community reactions on LinkedIn, saying the divided response suggests the site found the right balance. "Some wanted a full ban. Some think we went too far. That tells me we drew the line where the real argument is," he wrote.
