MGSHDFix, a visual restoration mod for classic Metal Gear games, released version 5.0.1 with major performance upgrades. The update cuts Metal Gear Solid 2 loading times significantly. Speedrunners reported the new prefetch system shaved up to 5 minutes off elapsed realtime from their runs. On Linux and Steam Deck, level transition load times dropped by 4 to 6 seconds per room.

The mod adds raw mouse input support for third-person play in MGS2 and MGS3, with first-person support planned for version 5.1.0. MGSHDFix 5.0.1 includes loose MP3, WAV, OGG, and FLAC soundtrack loading for Metal Gear 1 and 2. The update restores MSX2 sprites to Metal Gear 2, allowing players to experience the game with Mel Gibson as originally designed. Author Afevis Solmunko also added an option in the original Metal Gears to make doors automatically check inventory for keycards, mirroring MGS2 functionality.
