Dwarf Fortress is receiving a meat biome, according to studio co-founder Tarn Adams in a "Future of the Fortress" thread on the Bay 12 forums. The biome will exist underground and contain terrain made of muscle, bone, vertebral walls, sinew, and sphincters. Players will be able to mine the meat for resources.
Adams noted that rivers of blood and fluids would require a separate fluid update that is not currently planned. The studio considered adding taps on vertebral walls to extract cosmic spinal fluid, but scrapped the idea. The meat biome will not include meat trees or animated zombie meat.
Adams did not explain the biome's origin, whether it stems from a fungal phenomenon or a massive mammalian cadaver. He confirmed that regular meat cannot currently be animated in the game.
The forum thread also covers planned changes to Dwarf Fortress's magic system, including how arcane knowledge is categorized, transmitted, preserved, and lost. Developer Bay 12 is also working on a crystal biome.
