PlayStation recorded 127 million monthly active users across PS4 and PS5 in September, up seven percent year-on-year and marking a record high. Total logged play time increased four percent year-on-year. Sony's Game & Network Services division posted revenue growth of nine percent and operating profit growth of 83 percent year-on-year.
Marvel's Wolverine drove much of the quarter's performance despite mixed reception. The game sold 2.4 million copies in roughly 50 days as of November 4th. Ghost of Yotei, which launched in October 2025, has sold 3.3 million copies.
PS5 hardware sales declined in the period. Sony sold 2.6 million PS5 consoles, down from 4 million in the same quarter last year. With 100 million PS5 units in the market, Sony is shifting focus toward converting active account holders into more paying customers.
PlayStation 6 development is on track. Sony CFO Lin Tao stated the console is "progressing as scheduled" with "solid progress" expected in 2027. Tao characterized the PS5 sales decline as normal for a console at this stage of its lifecycle. "Although new PS5 unit sales are gradually declining as expected at this stage of the console life cycle, the PlayStation platform continues to expand and grow in a stable manner," Tao said.
The results come after controversy over Sony's plan to end PlayStation disc manufacturing by January 2028, a decision the audience widely viewed as anti-consumer. Sony's financial performance appears largely unaffected by the backlash.
