ArenaNet announced Guild Wars Afterlife, a paid expansion for the original Guild Wars launching January 13, 2027. The expansion marks the first new content for the 21-year-old game in nearly two decades, following 2007's Eye of the North.
Afterlife transports players from Tyria into the Mists to explore a lost land of the dead. The expansion brings back content from the cancelled Utopia campaign, including the Mesoamerican-inspired setting of Xotecha.
The new dungeon, called the Unformed, changes with each playthrough. A custom skill-drafting mechanic lets players swap abilities during runs. Rewards earned in the Mists carry over to the main game.
Players need Guild Wars Reforged, the 2025 re-release of the original, to access Afterlife. The expansion costs $30 at full price, with a $24 pre-order discount. It launches on PC, Steam, the App Store, and Google Play.
ArenaNet said it is "actively developing all three games at the same time," referring to the original Guild Wars, Guild Wars 2, and Guild Wars 3, which is currently in development.
