Activision is breaking Call of Duty beta tradition by bundling three major modes into the Modern Warfare 4 beta instead of restricting it to multiplayer alone. The beta will include a campaign mission called Entrenched, the full multiplayer suite, and the new Warzone map Resurgence Zodiac.

The studio plans to showcase this expanded content during Call of Duty: Next on August 21. Early access runs from August 21-25 for players who preorder the game, with a public beta beginning August 28.

This represents a significant shift in how Activision tests new Call of Duty entries. Historically, CoD betas have focused exclusively on multiplayer to stress-test servers and gather player feedback on balance and mechanics. Bundling campaign content and a new battle royale map simultaneously expands the scope considerably.

The move serves multiple purposes. It lets Activision stress-test backend infrastructure across three distinct modes at once. It gives players a comprehensive feel for what Modern Warfare 4 offers before launch. For Warzone players specifically, early access to Resurgence Zodiac could generate buzz around the free-to-play battle royale that now stands as a core pillar of the Call of Duty ecosystem.

The inclusion of campaign content in a public beta is particularly noteworthy. Story missions rarely appear in beta phases due to spoiler concerns and because single-player experiences don't require the same network stress testing as multiplayer. That Activision is confident enough to showcase Entrenched suggests the campaign is far enough along that early access won't spoil critical narrative beats.

This expanded beta approach reflects how modern AAA shooters operate. Call of Duty must prove its multiplayer, prove its battle royale, and prove its campaign story all compete effectively in crowded markets. PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds,
