Toonstruck, the point-and-click adventure from Burst Studios, turned 30 today. The game stars Christopher Lloyd as Drew Blanc, a cartoonist sucked into his television and trapped in the cartoon city of Cutopia. Lloyd's character must team up with Flux Wildly, voiced by Dan Castellaneta, to stop Count Nefarious, voiced by Tim Curry, from turning cute things evil.
The game blends hand-drawn animation with live-action footage and features voice work from David Ogden Stiers, Dom DeLuise, and Jeff Bennett alongside its lead cast. The premise draws inspiration from Who Framed Roger Rabbit and celebrates early-20th-century cartoon style with both reverence and irreverence.
Toonstruck was a commercial failure on release and a troubled development led to a planned sequel never materializing. The game remained difficult to play for most of the past three decades, stuck in DOS emulation and incompatible with systems beyond Windows XP.
The title now runs smoothly via ScummVM on Steam for $20. The Steam version handles emulation automatically. The game runs roughly 10 hours long.
