Sony has acquired film rights to Mouthwashing, the 2024 independent horror game from developer Wrong Organ and publisher Critical Reflex. Karyn Kusama, known for directing the television series Yellowjackets, will direct the adaptation. Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay will write the screenplay. Production company Crooked Highway, behind the Ethan Hawke film series The Black Phone, is also attached to the project.
No cast has been announced, and it remains unclear whether the film will follow the game's narrative. Mouthwashing sold more than 500,000 copies on PC as of February 2025, with a console release happening yesterday. The game received critical acclaim.
The deal follows the success of Iron Lung, a film adaptation of an indie horror game created by Mark Fischbach and his production company Markiplier Studios, which earned $21 million globally after its premiere.
