Nvidia released a free Steam demo titled "GeForce 8800 GTX - 20 Years of a Legend" that lets players simulate unboxing the company's iconic graphics card from 2006. The demo was developed by Dylan Browne and places players in a mid-2000s bedroom where they can unbox the card, inspect it closely, and install it into an era-accurate PC tower. The experience includes nods to GeForce history and hidden easter eggs, rendered using DLSS 4.5 with Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, Ray Reconstruction, path tracing, and Mega Geometry.
The GeForce 8800 GTX originally retailed for $599 in 2006, equivalent to roughly $1,000 in current dollars. The demo's minimum requirements specify an RTX 4070 graphics card to run. The release arrives during ongoing memory shortages that have made purchasing powerful new graphics cards difficult and expensive for consumers.
