Dead of the Brain, a 1992 PC-98 adventure game from developer FairyTale, arrived on Steam this weekend with its first official English localization. The point-and-click game follows Cole and Dr. Cooger as a zombie outbreak spreads through their city after Cooger's formula to revive the dead escapes containment.

Publisher FAKKU, a hentai platform that has begun releasing retro Japanese non-pornographic games on modern hardware, handled the port. FAKKU removed some racier sequences to avoid a harsher Steam rating, but players can unlock them with a free patch available on FAKKU's homepage.

Dead of the Brain draws inspiration from George Romero's Living Dead saga and Brian Yuzna's Re-Animator films. The game marked FairyTale's first venture into horror after years making erotica titles. It spawned a direct sequel and a spin-off in the Nightmare Collection.

FAKKU will also publish the 1992 RPG Dengeki Nurse in the near future. The Dead of the Brain release arrives alongside other retro horror ports this week, including remasters of both Ecstatica games on Steam.
