Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will remove footage of the October 29, 2022 Itaewon crowd crush tragedy from its opening sequence. The incident in Seoul killed 160 people during Halloween celebrations. Activision confirmed to Korean news outlet MBC that the footage would be removed in a November 12 update and apologized to families and victims affected by its inclusion.
The game's opening uses the real tragedy footage, shown through a distorted filter, while a narrator describes a fictional North Korean invasion of South Korea. Activision stated there was no intention to downplay the pain caused by the tragedy. As of publication, Activision and developer Infinity Ward have not released an English-language statement about the removal.
