Aspyr Media plans to resurrect The Lord of the Rings: War in the North, the 2011 action RPG developed by Snowblind Studios, with a full re-release across modern platforms. The studio signals this revival represents the first in a broader push to bring additional Lord of the Rings games back into circulation.

War in the North originally launched on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC as a three-player cooperative action RPG set during the events of The Hobbit. The game featured real-time combat, loot-driven progression, and a custom protagonist system that let players forge their own hero. It received middling reviews at launch but maintained a dedicated cult following for its focus on party-based gameplay and Tolkien lore.

Aspyr Media, known for shepherding legacy titles through modern re-releases and remasters, frames this re-release as part of a larger licensing strategy surrounding Middle-earth properties. The publisher holds interactive entertainment rights to the Tolkien catalog through a deal that extends beyond War in the North, positioning the studio to revive other dormant LOTR games.

The gaming industry's relationship with Middle-earth IP has remained volatile. Embrace Games shut down Denuvo's anti-cheat servers for Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War in 2022, effectively killing online functionality. Meanwhile, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum launched to critical scorn in 2023, damaging confidence in new Tolkien projects. This makes Aspyr's strategy to re-release proven older titles strategically sound. Players retain nostalgia for established franchises while Aspyr avoids the risk of new game development.

Aspyr has not detailed which additional LOTR titles may resurface or provided release windows. War in the North will arrive on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S,
