Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot downplayed the industry impact of Sony's reported move toward a disc-free PlayStation 6, telling investors the shift carries both advantages and drawbacks but won't shake the gaming market. Guillemot characterized the transition as a natural evolution rather than a seismic event for the sector.
The comments come as Sony readies its next-generation console without optical drive support, accelerating the industry's ongoing pivot to digital distribution. While physical media remains relevant for certain player segments, the executive suggested the shift aligns with broader market trends already underway. Publishers like Ubisoft have steadily expanded digital storefronts and day-one digital releases, reducing reliance on retail disc sales.
Guillemot's measured stance reflects the publisher's confidence in digital monetization models. Ubisoft generates substantial revenue through digital storefronts, subscription services like Game Pass, and live-service ecosystems. A disc-less PlayStation presents no existential threat to that business, though some older players and collectors do prefer physical ownership.

Pre-owned markets, currently small but meaningful in some regions, disappear entirely. Secondary markets for physical games, particularly in territories with limited broadband infrastructure, could face disruption.
However, the industry has already normalized digital-only distribution through Steam, Epic Games Store, and console digital libraries. PC gaming shifted this direction years ago without collapsing the market. Mobile gaming exists almost entirely in digital form. Console manufacturers gain storage space, reduce manufacturing costs, and strengthen control over their ecosystems without physical retail friction.
Guillemot's pragmatism suggests major publishers see the disc-free future as manageable rather than catastrophic. The transition streamlines supply chains and reduces environmental impact from disc manufacturing and
