Amazon Games' chief Jeff Gattis is pushing cloud gaming as a solution to expensive next-generation consoles, a pitch that arrives as industry forecasts predict $1,000 price tags for upcoming hardware.

Speaking to the BBC, Gattis acknowledged the console market's importance but positioned cloud gaming as an alternative for the untapped global audience. With 2.5 to 3 billion gamers worldwide but only a fraction owning traditional systems, Gattis sees streaming as the bridge to reach underserved players.

The problem: cloud gaming has repeatedly failed to gain traction. Services like PlayStation Plus Premium, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and GeForce Now exist but remain niche products. Infrastructure barriers plague adoption in developing markets where broadband remains unreliable or expensive. Latency issues persist for competitive gaming. Players prefer owning games outright rather than renting access through subscriptions.

Amazon's Luna platform exemplifies this struggle. Launched in 2020 with ambitions to compete with Xbox Game Pass, Luna never gained meaningful market share. The service operates at a disadvantage against entrenched competitors who bundle cloud gaming with existing ecosystems and player bases. Amazon's gaming division has suffered multiple setbacks, including studio closures and canceled projects.

Gattis' timing adds another layer of irony. Just as console manufacturers announce premium hardware priced beyond traditional consumer comfort, he's advocating for a service model that demands consistent internet connectivity, ongoing subscription fees, and zero game ownership. The barrier to entry differs from high hardware costs, but it's arguably less appealing to value-conscious players.

For developing nations where Gattis focuses expansion, connectivity remains the central obstacle. Cloud gaming requires sustained broadband speeds that gaming-focused rural or low-income communities typically lack. Mobile gaming dominates those markets for good reason.
