Digital Extremes is bringing tabletop RPG vibes into Warframe with Fables & Frontiers, a new roguelike mode launching in August as part of the Amir's Shockwave update. The mode draws heavy inspiration from Dungeons & Dragons mechanics while maintaining its own identity within the looter shooter's ecosystem.

Fables & Frontiers drops players into procedurally generated dungeons where they'll roll dice, manage character stats, and navigate turn-based combat encounters. The roguelike structure means each run differs significantly, with different loot, enemy layouts, and narrative branches shaping each playthrough. Players collect weapons and abilities between rooms, building synergies that compound as they progress deeper into dungeons.

The mode integrates into Warframe's existing progression system. Runs reward standard in-game currency and materials players need for crafting and upgrading gear. This keeps Fables & Frontiers relevant to the main game's endgame grind rather than treating it as isolated content.

Digital Extremes clearly studied what made roguelikes like Hades and Slay the Spire resonate with players. The dice-roll foundation creates unpredictability that contrasts with Warframe's usually deterministic mission structure. That randomness encourages experimentation and replay value, pushing players toward unconventional loadouts and playstyles they'd normally skip.

The D&D influence is obvious but careful. Rather than licensing Dungeons & Dragons directly, Digital Extremes created a thematically aligned system that captures tabletop RPG energy without legal complications. This approach lets the studio maintain creative control while honoring what makes tabletop gaming compelling.

Warframe's community has spent over a decade with the game, and fatigue around certain mission types occasionally surfaces in forums and Discord. Fables & Front
