Microsoft is shutting down or spinning off five acclaimed studios as part of sweeping layoffs across its gaming division. Xbox Gaming CEO Asha Sharma announced 3,200 job cuts across the company's next financial year, with 1,600 positions eliminated immediately. The studios being severed include Double Fine Productions, Arkane Studios, Undead Labs, Compulsion Games, and Ninja Theory.

Double Fine created Psychonauts and Psychonauts 2. Arkane Studios developed Dishonored, Prey, and Redfall. Undead Labs made State of Decay and State of Decay 2. Compulsion Games produced Contrast and We Happy Few. Ninja Theory delivered DmC Devil May Cry and Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2, which launched on Xbox Game Pass last year.

These studios represent decades of development talent and proven IP. Microsoft acquired most of them during its aggressive expansion under former Xbox boss Phil Spencer. The move contradicts the company's stated strategy of building a first-party portfolio to compete with Sony and Nintendo.

The restructuring signals a major strategic pivot. Microsoft faces pressure from investors over Xbox's financial performance and Game Pass sustainability concerns. The company spent billions acquiring Bethesda and Activision Blizzard, yet continues to struggle with exclusive game releases and player engagement.

Other divisions also face cuts. Bethesda, Blizzard, and other Microsoft gaming properties are receiving layoff notices. The company plans to focus resources on fewer, higher-priority projects.

Industry reaction centers on the human cost and long-term damage to Xbox's first-party ecosystem. Developers losing positions include industry veterans with years of studio leadership and creative experience. Several of these studios were in active development on unannounced projects.

Microsoft's gaming restructuring reflects broader tech industry contraction. Major
