Ubisoft's upcoming Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced remake will expand the naval exploration experience with additional shipwrecks scattered across the game world. Technical director Jussi Markkanen confirmed developers added "a lot" of new sunken vessels beyond what existed in the 2013 original.
The shipwrecks serve as more than cosmetic additions. Markkanen stated the team embedded "little secrets" within these underwater locations that introduce "one more dimension for the player to explore" while diving. This suggests the remake doesn't simply recreate the original's content but actively enhances core gameplay loops around maritime discovery.
Black Flag Resynced targets PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC when it launches later this year. The remake modernizes the 2013 pirate adventure, which remains a franchise high point for its open-world naval combat and exploration mechanics. Adding fresh underwater content addresses one of the original's praised features, diving sequences that rewarded player curiosity with treasure and lore.
The decision reflects Ubisoft's commitment to justify a full remake rather than a remaster. New shipwrecks with embedded secrets ensure returning players encounter unexplored content. This approach mirrors how other high-profile remakes like Final Fantasy VII Rebuild introduce substantive new story and world-building elements rather than simple visual upgrades.
Assassin's Creed Black Flag's naval systems set the template for later entries like Origins and Odyssey. A modernized version with expanded exploration opportunities could demonstrate why the original resonated with players and justify the franchise's pivot toward action-RPG mechanics. The shipwreck additions specifically target divers and treasure hunters, a player archetype the original cultivated through its Templar relic hunting and naval contracts.
