Rockstar Games will let players upgrade Grand Theft Auto 5 from previous-generation versions to the enhanced editions for free starting June 18. Players who own GTA 5 on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One can transfer their save data and progress to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions at no cost.
This free upgrade applies to the standard editions of GTA 5, not GTA Online accounts purchased separately. The move mirrors industry standards set by other major publishers, who offered free next-gen upgrades for titles like Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War and Assassin's Creed Valhalla during the console transition period.
GTA 5's enhanced versions feature improved graphics, faster load times, and performance upgrades optimized for current-generation hardware. The PS5 and Xbox Series X editions run at higher frame rates and resolutions compared to their PS4 and Xbox One counterparts. GTA Online, Rockstar's multiplayer component, benefits from these technical improvements as well.
Rockstar originally released GTA 5 in 2013 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, then ported it to PS4 and Xbox One in 2014. The PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions launched in November 2021. The free upgrade program removes friction for players sitting on older hardware, potentially expanding the active player base across next-gen consoles.
This upgrade path helps Rockstar consolidate its audience as it approaches the long-awaited launch of Grand Theft Auto 6, scheduled for Fall 2025. By making the transition seamless, the studio removes barriers for players who may skip forward as the new entry approaches. GTA 5 remains one of the best-selling video games of all time, with over 180 million copies sold across platforms since launch.
