Microsoft is closing Compulsion Games, the Canadian studio behind We Happy Few and the Peabody Award-winning South of Midnight. The shutdown affects over 90 employees.
Compulsion Games joined Xbox Game Pass in 2018 following the success of Contrast, its debut indie platformer. We Happy Few, a dystopian survival game released in 2018, built the studio's reputation for distinctive art direction and narrative ambition. South of Midnight, a gothic adventure title, earned critical acclaim and major industry recognition before its release, positioning Compulsion as a key creative voice within Xbox's first-party lineup.
The closure marks part of a broader Microsoft restructuring. Insider Gaming's Mike Straw reported that Arkane Studios, maker of Dishonored and Redfall, faces closure as well. These cuts represent the latest in a wave of studio shutdowns across the industry, following similar moves by Sony, Embracer Group, and other major publishers in recent months.
The timing stings particularly hard for Compulsion. South of Midnight was positioned as a flagship release, yet the studio never reached the commercial success Microsoft likely anticipated from its portfolio. We Happy Few had mixed reception despite its creative vision, and neither title achieved blockbuster status within Game Pass or on the broader market.
For Xbox, the shutdowns signal a shift in strategy. Rather than maintain a sprawling first-party development network, the company appears focused on consolidating around higher-performing franchises and established IPs. This approach prioritizes proven commercial returns over experimental projects, even when those experiments earn critical praise.
The broader impact reaches beyond just these two studios. Microsoft's messaging has been muddled. Xbox leadership talks about supporting diverse game types and emerging talent, yet the execution repeatedly cuts smaller, creatively ambitious teams. This creates friction with the industry's narrative around innovation and artist freedom.
