Rockstar Games has added Grand Theft Auto 5 to its subscription service GTA+ ahead of Grand Theft Auto 6's November launch. The move covers both the single-player campaign and GTA Online for PC subscribers, rolling out across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

GTA+ costs $8 monthly and bundles multiple Rockstar titles including Bully, L.A. Noire, and Red Dead Redemption alongside rotating content. The subscription model mirrors industry trends where publishers push legacy titles into service ecosystems to drive recurring revenue before major releases drop.

This timing appears strategic. GTA 5, released in 2013, has sustained unprecedented longevity through GTA Online's live-service updates and monetization. Adding it to subscription removes friction for new players while Rockstar prepares players for the generational shift to GTA 6. The move also hedges against Day One Game Pass concerns, keeping Rockstar's flagship franchise exclusive to their own platform rather than competing services like Xbox Game Pass.

Subscription inclusion doesn't mean permanent residency. Rockstar explicitly notes that games rotate out of the GTA+ library, preventing players from assuming perpetual access. This preserves purchase incentives for players who want permanent ownership.

The strategy targets three player segments. Casual players exploring GTA's campaign get friction-free entry. GTA Online grinders on PC gain convenience. Potential GTA 6 buyers see the ecosystem value before committing $70 to the new entry.

However, the $8 monthly fee still requires commitment. Day One Game Pass inclusion would reach broader audiences, but Rockstar prioritizes subscription margin over maximum penetration. Given GTA 5's 180-million-unit sales, the publisher can afford selective distribution.
