IO Interactive's 007 First Light has surpassed 3 million sales, crushing internal forecasts, CEO Hakan Abrak revealed. The James Bond title is tracking considerably above what the studio projected.
Abrak also clarified widespread reporting about the game's budget. While First Light represents Denmark's most expensive entertainment product ever made, the $200 million figure circulating includes more than pure development costs. The actual game development budget fell short of that total, though Abrak did not disclose the exact figure.
IO Interactive developed First Light as a major exclusive for PlayStation 5, launching last October. The studio built the game on Unreal Engine 5, a significant technical undertaking for the Danish developer known for the Hitman trilogy. The 3 million sales milestone arrived faster than expected, validating the publisher's decision to invest heavily in the Bond property.
The clarification matters because $200 million development budgets have become flashpoints in industry discussions about AAA game economics. Games like Starfield, Grand Theft Auto V, and Cyberpunk 2077 have faced scrutiny over ballooning costs. IO Interactive's correction suggests the conversation around First Light's budget was inflated, though the studio clearly invested substantially to deliver a PlayStation 5 showcase title.
First Light launched to solid critical reception and player engagement. The sales performance indicates Sony's exclusive strategy and the enduring appeal of the Bond license continue resonating with console audiences. For IO Interactive, now owned by Embracer Group, the success represents validation for expanding beyond the Hitman franchise into premium, licensed properties.
The strong sales trajectory also positions IO for future Bond projects. The developer secured a multi-game deal with the 007 franchise, meaning First Light serves as the foundation for continued investment in spy-themed entertainment at the studio's scale.
