Studio Reset, a new Canadian independent studio, launched today with several BioWare veterans on its roster. Kaelin Lavallée leads the effort as creative director. Lavallée previously served as lead narrative designer on Dragon Age: Inquisition and Mass Effect Andromeda, bringing over a decade of AAA narrative experience to the indie space.

The studio aims to create an adventure game world where "the ordinary starts to feel like it is hiding something." This describes a shift toward mystery and atmospheric storytelling rather than the bombastic narrative spectacle BioWare built its reputation on. Lavallée's departure from the publisher signals broader industry consolidation and burnout among senior talent. Mass Effect Andromeda's critical reception underperformed expectations, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard launched to mixed player reception last year. BioWare itself faces internal turmoil following layoffs and the cancellation of multiple projects.

Studio Reset's formation reflects a pattern. Veteran narrative designers and designers from failed or underperforming AAA projects increasingly strike out independently to pursue smaller-scope games with clearer creative vision. The studio's concept art suggests a game focused on environmental storytelling and dread rather than companion-driven dialogue trees. This positions the project closer to indie darlings like Outer Wilds than to Mass Effect's galactic scope.

The timing matters. BioWare's recent stumbles have created a talent exodus. Lavallée's involvement lends credibility to Studio Reset, but also raises questions about how indie development will accommodate his previous experience designing for teams of hundreds. Smaller budgets demand different design philosophies. What worked narratively in Dragon Age: Inquisition's sprawling single-player campaign may not translate directly to an indie project with different resource constraints.

Studio Reset has not announced a platform, release window, or publisher deal. The
