Epic Games is overhauling Fortnite Zero Build with a May 14 update that marks the mode's first standalone overhaul since its 2022 launch. The changes fundamentally reshape how players engage in combat and movement.
The update introduces a new utility slot exclusive to Zero Build, allowing players to carry additional equipment beyond their standard loadout. Glider re-deploy now activates at any time when jumping from tall objects, replacing the previous fall-damage system entirely. Players no longer take fall damage whatsoever. The pickaxe gains new utility with unlimited sprint capability when equipped, transforming it from a purely destructive tool into a mobility option.
These aren't incremental tweaks. They reshape Zero Build's core flow by removing fall damage as a penalty, rewarding aggressive vertical plays, and giving players more tools without sacrificing weapon slots. The utility slot especially hints at deeper loadout customization coming to the mode.
Zero Build launched in 2022 as a response to player demand for a traditional battle royale without Fortnite's building mechanics. It found an audience among players who wanted gunplay-focused combat, but the mode has largely operated under the same ruleset as standard Fortnite minus construction. This update signals Epic recognizes Zero Build needs its own design identity.
The timing matters. Coming as the "last major update in Chapter 7 Season 2," this overhaul sets the foundation for what Zero Build becomes heading into the next chapter. Epic is essentially admitting the mode stagnated alongside standard Fortnite and needed fresh mechanics to stay competitive against battle royales like Warzone and Apex Legends that have iterated faster on movement and survival systems.
The unlimited sprint with pickaxe equipped is particularly interesting. It converts a utility item into a mobility tool, rewarding players who actively switch loadouts mid-engagement rather than staying locked
