Shift Up has ditched Sony's publishing deal for Stellar Blade 2, moving toward self-publishing for the sequel. The South Korean studio revealed the shift in its latest earnings report, confirming development progresses on schedule to meet quality targets.

This move fundamentally changes the franchise's distribution strategy. The original Stellar Blade launched as a PlayStation 5 exclusive in April 2024, backed by Sony's publishing infrastructure. That partnership gave the action game visibility and platform support but locked it to PS5 for months. Now, Shift Up wants direct control over releases across multiple platforms.

Self-publishing typically means faster PC ports and wider day-one multiplatform availability. Stellar Blade eventually came to PC in December 2024, nearly eight months after its PlayStation debut. That delay frustrated players who wanted to experience the title-based action combat on their preferred hardware. With Shift Up handling publishing directly, Stellar Blade 2 could launch simultaneously on PlayStation and PC, eliminating the exclusivity window that frustrated non-console gamers.

The studio framed the transition as embracing a "first-party service model," suggesting ongoing content updates and long-term monetization planning beyond the base game sale. This aligns with industry trends where studios maintain live service support for action titles, similar to how FromSoftware handled Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree DLC.

Stellar Blade 2 remains in active development and on track for its quality targets. Shift Up promises to reveal more details within 2025, though no specific release window exists yet. The original game built solid player momentum with its precise parry-based combat system and Devil May Cry-inspired style ranking. A sequel arriving simultaneously on PS5 and PC could significantly expand the franchise's reach compared to its predecessor's platform-staggered launch.

This decision positions Shift Up as
