Paranormal Activity: Threshold will never launch. Paramount Pictures cancelled the game adaptation, developer Brian Clarke announced this week on X (formerly Twitter).
Clarke, the solo developer operating under DarkStone Digital, created the game independently. His previous title, The Mortuary Assistant, shipped in 2022 to critical acclaim. Threshold represented his ambitious foray into licensed horror gaming, adapting the Paranormal Activity film franchise into an interactive experience.
Paramount's decision to pull the plug came down to timing. The publisher refused to wait longer for Clarke to complete development. Clarke shared this reasoning in a statement on his personal account, confirming that Paramount's patience had simply expired. The developer did not elaborate on the project's current state or how close it came to completion.
This cancellation reflects ongoing tension in licensed game development. Film studios typically impose strict deadlines tied to theatrical releases, merchandise cycles, or broader franchise strategies. When developers miss those windows, publishers often shelve projects entirely rather than release them independently. Clarke's status as a solo operator left him vulnerable to this dynamic. A larger studio with negotiating power might have secured an extension.
Paranormal Activity represents one of horror's most bankable franchises, with multiple sequels and a recent VR adaptation. A proper game adaptation could have capitalized on that recognition. Clarke's previous work demonstrates he understands horror atmospherics and psychological tension, qualities essential to capturing Paranormal Activity's found-footage appeal.
The cancellation marks another casualty in the graveyard of abandoned licensed games. Players will never experience Clarke's interpretation of the franchise. For DarkStone Digital, the loss removes a potential breakthrough project that could have elevated the studio's profile beyond indie circles. Clarke now returns focus to original work, leaving Paramount's Paranormal Activity IP untouched by interactive media once again.
