Warhorse Studios refuses to confirm or deny rumors that it's developing a Lord of the Rings game for Embracer Group. Content director Ondrej Bittner offered a cryptic non-answer, stating only that the studio works on "a huge, immersive RPG" without naming the project.

The studio's refusal to comment either way fuels speculation. Embracer owns the licensing rights to multiple Lord of the Rings game projects following its acquisition of Middle-earth Enterprises. Warhorse, fresh off Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, has demonstrated mastery of immersive first-person RPGs that prioritize historical authenticity and player agency.

If true, a Tolkien adaptation from Warhorse Studios carries real promise. The Czech developer's commitment to environmental storytelling and minimal UI design contrasts sharply with the bloated, quest-marker-laden open worlds dominating the market. Their approach actually respects player intelligence.

The catch. Warhorse must avoid the trap that caught other licensed RPGs. A Lord of the Rings game only works if it builds genuine immersion in Middle-earth rather than slapping the license over generic gameplay. Given Warhorse's track record, there's reason for cautious optimism.

Expect an official announcement eventually. Until then, this remains industry theater.
