IO Interactive and Sony created a PS5 DualSense controller for 007 First Light that fans mistook for a barrel design homage. The iconic gun barrel sequence defines James Bond's visual identity, so the confusion seemed logical. Art director Rasmus Poulsen clarified the design wasn't meant to replicate that famous logo. Instead, IO chose to reference how the game's UI feels and looks. The controller reflects the product itself rather than slapping a franchise stamp onto the hardware.
This distinction matters. Licensed controllers often feel like lazy cash grabs that prioritize branding over thoughtful design. IO's approach, intentional or not, avoids that trap by grounding the aesthetic in the actual game experience. Whether players find the result visually striking remains subjective. But the team's reasoning shows someone thought about the design beyond simply stamping Bond iconography onto a controller.
